You work hard, and we work hard to ensure your boots work hard day in and day out.
That’s why we Consciously Create our work boots and shoes with durable materials like abrasion-resistant synthetic and premium leather uppers, and reinforce the construction to last longer. Better for you, your work, and the planet.
Luckily you don't have to work very hard to keep your KEEN Utility boots in top shape – it just takes a little effort in the form of routine care:
Regular Cleaning
No matter the material, regular cleaning is essential to maintain your boots.
• Refresh Your Laces: Start by removing your laces and soaking them in soapy water, then let them air dry before re-lacing.
• Remove Dirt and Debris: After each use, knock off any dirt or mud. Use a brush to remove any dirt or grime, focusing on any debris that may be stuck in the lugs on the bottom of the shoe. For leather, a slightly damp cloth is ideal; for synthetic, you can use mild soap and water.
• Dry With Care: If your boots get wet, let them dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators or the sun, as these can damage the material.
Conditioning Leather
Many of our work boots are made with leather, because it is a durable, protective material. Conditioning them is key to keeping them supple.
• Use a Good Conditioner: Every few months, apply a high-quality leather conditioner to maintain moisture and prevent cracking.
• Waterproofing: You may want to consider applying a waterproofing spray or wax specifically designed for leather. This adds an extra layer of protection against the elements. We like using this one from Nikwax because it’s PFAS free and easy to use.
Inspecting for Wear
Regularly check your boots for signs of wear and tear.
• Soles and Tread: Inspect the soles for signs of excessive wear. If the tread is worn down, it may be time to resole or replace your boots to maintain safety and traction. Some of our boots are constructed with a Goodyear welt, which makes it easy for the sole to be replaced by a local cobbler.
• Insoles: Over time, things like laces and insoles will start to wear out. It’s important to replace these elements of your shoes when needed to maintain comfort. We offer replacement insoles for your shoes here. And while we don’t sell any laces at this time, we recommend noting the length of your laces on the product page before purchasing.
Storing Your Boots Properly
How you store your boots can affect their longevity.
• Keep Them Dry: Store your boots in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight – not in the back of your truck, or near a radiator. Moisture can lead to mold, while direct heat can damage the materials.
• Use Boot Trees or Stuffing: Consider using boot trees or stuffing them with newspaper to help maintain their shape.
Taking care of your work boots will keep you protected and comfortable all day; and with a little regular love, they’ll be with you on the jobsite day after day.
As shoemakers, we’ve always believed that the more durable, comfortable, and versatile a shoe is, the less you’ll need to replace it.
