A longer-lasting shoe is a more sustainable shoe. So in addition to making durable, Consciously Created shoes that are free from PFAS and made with ethically sourced materials, we want to do everything we can to help you keep them on your feet longer.
The tricky thing with nubuck and suede is that although they are durable like traditional leather, they have a delicate side. While all three are made from animal hides, the key difference lies in their texture. Traditional leather is typically smooth and slightly shiny, while nubuck and suede are soft and velvety.
Nubuck is made from the outer side of the hide, like full-grain leather, but is brushed to create a textured and soft surface. Suede comes from the underside of the hide, so it has a naturally velvety texture that can be slightly more delicate than nubuck. This unique texture is what makes nubuck and suede shoes so appealing, but it also means they require different care methods compared to standard leather. Here's how to keep your nubuck or suede shoes looking their best, so you can wear them longer.
Cleaning
• Start by brushing off the extra dirt using a suede brush to gently remove any dirt or debris. This will help maintain the nap and prevent grime from embedding itself in the fibers.
• You can also use a damp cloth to remove any dirt. This will darken the color momentarily but should go away as it dries.
Stain Removal
• For stubborn spots, you can use a suede eraser (or pencil eraser) and gently rub the affected area to lift away any marks without damaging the texture.
• For heavy staining, we recommend using a wet cloth to apply white vinegar or rubbing alcohol, lightly dabbing at the stain. Avoid scrubbing and be sure to test an inconspicuous area first.
Repairing the Nap
The nap of suede or nubuck shoes is the collection of fibers that make up the soft velvety texture. Although it is durable, it can also be very delicate and easily damaged by water. To perfect your nap's texture, use a suede brush (or any soft bristled brush really) to revitalize the nap, following the grain and brushing gently.
Waterproofing
Because the rough surface of nubuck and suede tends to absorb water, you might consider using a waterproofing spray. This will provide an extra layer of protection without compromising that soft feel. We like this one from Nikwax, and it’s PFAS free!
Storage
If you’re putting your shoes away for the season, stuff them with old newspaper. This helps maintain their shape and prevents creasing while they rest.
